A huge mess on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway as at least 40 vehicles are involved in crashes this morning. Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou says visibility dropped to nearly zero.
“Fog rolled in very rapidly after about 8:30 this morning and we’ve got, actually right now, multiple crashes on both bridges,” Dufrechou said.
Dufrechou says it did not start off as a foggy morning on the 24-mile stretch of roadway.
“After the sun came up, it actually got thicker. After about 8:30 wind blew it in a little bit more and all of a sudden just hit a bunch of people almost simultaneously,” Dufrechou said.
Dufrechou says crews were called to several separate incidents.
“There are multiple, at least five and as many as eight to nine separate crashes,” Dufrechou said.
No one went over the rail and into the water, and all stranded vehicles made it off the Causeway. There were no serious injuries.
