House Education approves a bill to repeal state laws requiring educators to take certain training courses like CPR and substance abuse and allow BESE to decide the requirements. Rosepine Representative Charles Owens says BESE should choose the required educational courses for teachers and remove them from state law.
“I believe in passing those things over to BESE. To trusting those things to BESE. And let them decide what needs to go on inside of our classrooms.”
The proposed legislation repeals certain training requirements from the state code and gives the green light to BESE to adopt policies for teacher and student instruction.
“And for them at their appropriate time decide the frequency of this training, the utility of this training, and what training will be done inside of our schools.”
Owens wants to limit disruptions so that teachers can focus on classroom instruction.
“I want to empower our teachers. I want the school day to be a place where the teachers are there to teach and we empower them to the greatest extent possible.”
The bill now advances to the House.
