Even though Louisiana ranks among the country’s highest property and automobile insurance rates, you’d be surprised to learn that when it comes to pet insurance, Bayou State is ranked the most affordable. Dayna Drake with MarketWatch Guides said the statewide average to insure your pet is $36 a month.
“Louisiana ranks first place in the U.S. for cheapest pet insurance premiums. That’s nearly 22% cheaper than the national average, which is $46 a month,” said Drake.
The price of pet insurance varies depending on the type of pet, breed, and coverage. Insurance for dogs costs more compared to cats.
Drake said location is a driving factor for costs, and Louisiana’s lower cost of living is reflected in veterinary costs. She also credits a state law for pet insurers.
“They have to be upfront and disclose what the policy does and does not include, such as if they have coverage for pre-existing conditions or chronic illnesses. So, it really helps you understand what you’re paying for and what could still be out of pocket when you head to the vet,” said Drake.
Like humans, routine care for your pet, she said, is best so any disease or illness can be caught early. Among the types of things pet insurance will pay for, depending on your coverage are…
“Broken bones, snake bites, choking, cuts, that sort of thing as well as any medications, or x-rays, MRIs, procedures that may come along with that vet visit,” said Drake.
Drake said pet insurance in general does not cover pre-existing conditions or procedures that are considered elective.
