Milton drives up gas prices overnight

Drivers filling up their tanks today had quite the sticker shock. Don Redman with Triple-A Louisiana says gas prices spiked by about five cents overnight.

“Yesterday, the statewide average was $2.77 a gallon,” says Don Redman with AAA Louisiana. “We’re now looking at a statewide average today of about $2.82, despite the fact that the price of crude is relatively flat, staying at about $73 a barrel.”

Redman says you can blame the upcoming landfall of Hurricane Milton to the Florida Gulf Coast for this price spike.

“This has everything to with the inability to produce any more oil right now in the gulf, and … some of our shipping lanes are closed to tankers,” Redman points out.

This price increase is more regional in nature, Redman points out, and it shouldn’t be too long until gas prices come back down.

“Florida doesn’t do any off-shore drilling,” Redman notes. “It’s not a refinery type of state like Texas and Louisiana.”

Mid-grade is averaging $3.25 and premium is averaging $3.63.
