Nicholls State breaks ground on new state of the art Coastal Center and construction of two other facilities on campus

Nicholls State University hosted a big event highlighting the groundbreaking of its Coastal Center and a ribbon cutting for its athletic practice facility on Tuesday. Spokesperson Jared David says having a coastal center at the epicenter of coastal erosion along the Atchafalaya River will be first-class.

“What better way to research and come up with solutions for these problems than for the coastal center to be right here where the researchers need to be.”

David says the new state-of-the-art coastal facility will house a research division and a boardroom. He says the center will also house an educational outreach section geared towards primary and secondary students…

“If we show them the real problem that is our coastline and how quickly its receding, they may be more prone to want to get involved and want to come up with solutions as that next generation.”

This is the first time three construction projects have taken place on campus at the same time during the college’s 75 years of existence.

David says a state investment of $45 million helped pay for the construction of the coastal center, the athletic practice facility, and a new College of Nursing building. He says the construction of the building will allow the college to expand enrollment.

“We have a really successful nursing program here at Nicholls State University. By building this new building, it’s going to allow us to double the capacity. So we’re going to be able to help meet the demand of the industry.”
