Beginning tomorrow non-felons over the age of 18 can carry a concealed handgun without a permit in Louisiana. New Iberia Senator Blake Miguez, who authored the legislation said it’s a historic moment in Louisiana.

“It’s their Second Amendment right to defend themselves and their loved ones, especially with the crime rates as high as they are in the nation, as well as Louisiana, against violent criminals,” said Miguez.

Miguez, a world champion competitive pistol shooter, said all the same restrictions, obligations, and responsibilities under constitutional carry still apply as they do with a concealed carry permit.

“So, all those things, restricted places, and carrying under the influence of alcohol, it is restricted to a certain level, to .05 blood alcohol content and greater, as well as duty to inform officers on an official stop,” said Miguez.

Miguez said you can find those rules and regulations at LSP.org and other gun safety tips. Miguez said the new law, which goes into effect on Independence Day, empowers law-abiding citizens with the right to defend themselves.

“We’re tired of the times in Louisiana where law-abiding citizens have to live in fear. We want the criminals to fear the consequences of their actions,” said Miguez.

If you aren’t trained in how to use a firearm, Miguez urges you to take a course for your own safety and the safety of others. You can find more information on LSP’s website. Louisiana will become the 29th state to allow permitless carry.
