Before you attempt to host your own fireworks show, President of the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association Tracey Normand said first be sure you aren’t violating any local ordinances. He said drinking and driving isn’t a good idea; drinking and something explosive is a worse idea.

“If you’re shooting fireworks and you’ve been drinking, your friends need to take care of you and say, ‘Hey this isn’t a very good idea let’s live to see tomorrow, or let’s keep all out digits,’” said Normand.

The Gonzales Fire Chief said to set off fireworks at least 200 feet away from structures, vehicles, and trash and never to allow children to light or handle fireworks. And make sure you have either a fire extinguisher or water nearby.

“You know we all love our fireworks; we all love watching and seeing our fireworks, but there comes a point where you want to make sure everybody’s safe. And remember 9-1-1 is your friend. If something happens call the fire department,” said Normand.

And after you’ve lit your last firecracker, Normand said it’s imperative to clean up afterward to avoid an encore light show.

“Just like trying to get your kids to clean their room, everybody likes to shoot them, but nobody likes to clean them. Take the garden hose and wet things down, get it out of the road. Be nice to your neighbors. Your fun shouldn’t be their obstacle,” said Normand.

According to the Consumer Protection Agency on average 200 people will go to the emergency room for fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday.
