Within hours after the assassination attempt on former President Trump’s life Saturday, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that there would be a Congressional investigation into the matter.
“We have two committees of jurisdiction that have already set hearings to get down to the bottom of what happened, but we will very likely wind up creating a new task force to move very efficiently and with precision through that investigation,” said Johnson.
Johnson said the American people deserve and demand answers on how 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to fire an AR-style rifle within 150 yards of Trump.
“And the sooner we provide those the better. And so, we’re very serious about it and we’ll be developing the rest of those details over the coming days,” said Johnson.
The Benton Republican said it appears there were serious security gaps, but he doesn’t want to pre-judge the Secret Service before an investigation is completed. Johnson promised accountability for the incident.
“The House will do its job of oversight. We’ll ensure that our Presidents and former Presidents and the candidates for President are adequately protected. And that should be something that’s of common sense and something that every American should agree with,” said Johnson.
Johnson addressed delegates Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention and told Louisiana Radio Network he changed the theme of his speech to “Make American Safe Again,” in the wake of Saturday’s tragic events in Butler, Pennsylvania.
