A federal judge has granted Serve Louisiana’s motion for a preliminary injunction, reinstating the AmeriCorps grant that had been abruptly canceled as part of a nationwide termination effort earlier this year. Serve Louisiana Program Director Maggie Connaro says the ruling restores the program’s operations and allows members to complete the 11-month service terms.

“This ruling allows AmeriCorps members to come back on effective tomorrow, and they can finish their service term, which originally was scheduled to go through the end of the month. “

Serve Louisiana filed suit in early May following the sudden cancelation of its federal grant by AmeriCorps at the direction of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).  Connaro says the preliminary injunction can be appealed within 60-days, and the battle is far from over.

“Their service term was scheduled to end at the end of July, and so we’re hopeful that we can get them through to finish the remainder of their term, and that appeal would be moot by the time that it might come about.”

Connaro says this ruling will not only be beneficial to team members who are serving but to the people the members were serving in the Corps, including food access, youth development, housing access, and coastal restoration.

“Ther’s just a lot of different areas that will benefit from having their members back and to server the community.”
