With car theft on the rise in Louisiana, there have been cases where car owners have tried to either confront the thieves during the theft or later when they track down their vehicle. In some cases, the car owner has been injured or even killed. Self-defense expert Dave Newman said it’s best not to confront them whatsoever…
“I understand the emotions, I want to get my car back, you’re angry but we’ve got to make intellectual decisions in emotional moments, or we wind up in the hospital or dead,” said Newman.
Newman said if you find yourself witnessing a car theft, try to document as much as you can, for example, record the incident….
“Without being seen because once you’re seen they’re going to retaliate. If you found the car because of GPS, you can probably find it again because of GPS,” said Newman.
Then contact the police once you are out of harm’s way and give them as much information as possible.
Newman said it’s not a smart move to go after your vehicle if you’re able to track it.
“I understand wanting to do so, I would probably want to as well, but as we see the results of that are hospital, death maybe. Don’t die over things, is the short answer,” said Newman.
If you try to go after a thief or try to retrieve your vehicle and use a gun to do so, he said you can be found as the aggressor and face charges yourself. He said to let the police handle it but follow up with them on the whereabouts of your vehicle.
