Women beaten to death with metal walker

Baton Rouge Police have arrested 37-year-old Denise Law in the beating death of 66-year-old Melinda Reed. Sgt. Darren Ahmed says officers responded to a call of an unresponsive female Thursday afternoon; they believe a metal walker was used as the murder weapon.

“When officers got there, they located the victim suffering from multiple injuries to her head and face. She was immediately transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries,” said Ahmed.

Ahmed says the suspect was still at the scene when homicide detectives arrived. Law was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with 1st Degree Murder.

“According to other individuals on the scene it started off as a verbal dispute that led to her picking up, I believe it was a metal walker of some sort and she commenced to beating Mrs. Reed,” said Ahmed.

While the investigation remains open, Ahmed says it remains to be determined if mental illness played a role.

“It definitely is a sad situation and something as far from a verbal dispute into a beating death is very sad,” said Ahmed.

The incident happened in a south Baton Rouge neighborhood off Brightside Lane at 3532 Riverway Drive.
