In 2023, Louisiana’s private sector reported 9 thousand nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, down from 21 thousand in 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  Secretary of the Louisiana Workforce Commission Susan Schowen says Louisiana had the lowest incidence rate among 41 participating states, second only to the District of Columbia.

“Louisiana ranked at the very top in terms of workplace satety when it comes to non-fatal injuries and illness.”

Schowen attributed these improvements to employer and worker commitment to safety. She highlighted the state’s achievement as a standard for further progress in creating safe work environments.

“We are actually, at the lowest point in several years.  So, we have been trending in the right direction and we anticipate that continuing in the future.

The private-sector incidence rate declined across several industries in Louisiana from 2022 to 2023. Schowen highlighted this was a concerted effort across all industries…

“Really, I think every company that engages in hazardous work has some sort of safety program and I know that they take it very seriously.”

This trend underscores Louisiana’s advancements in occupational safety, setting an example for other states to follow.
