The Nicholls State football team will host one of its biggest games in Thibodeaux ever tomorrow. The Colonels face the fourth-ranked Incarnate Word Cardinals, and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2. Athletic director Jonathan Terrell says the team was excited when it found out its game would be on national television.
“We were elated to know that this is going to happen. One, for our school but two, for our conference to be on national TV and have an opportunity to be showcased,” Terrell said.
It is not often that Nicholls is able to showcase its football program coast to coast. Terrell says they jumped at the chance to play in Week Zero on national TV.
“It’s really, really exciting to know that we’re about to sit here and play on National TV and be featured for at least an hour, that we’re the only college football game that is on between 12 and 1,” Terrell said.
It’s also a new era of Nicholls football as Tommy Rybacki begins his first year as head coach, replacing the school’s all-time wins leader, Tim Rebowe. Terrell says Rybacki is the perfect successor to Rebowe.
“He has been with Coach Rebowe for 10 years. This is now his team. Really excited. You want somebody who knows what’s happening at Nicholls. A tough job, right? Don’t have everything that you need, but we have what you need to be successful,” Terrell said.
Kickoff tomorrow is at noon.
