We are looking at a dry weekend across the state and abnormally dry conditions have developed across south Louisiana and along the Arkansas border. State Climatologist Jay Grymes says nearly half of the state is on the verge of drought conditions according to the Drought Monitor.
“We’ve seen rainfall totals over the last couple of months. It’s not just been the last few weeks, but actually the last couple of months have been running below normal for a good part of Louisiana,” Grymes said.
Grymes says other than a pop-up thunderstorm here or there, there’s not a significant chance for rain for several days.
“Maybe for another five to seven days. It could be the end of next week before we get a real potential for some rain,” Grymes said.
Grymes says the dry conditions will likely worsen as we move into fall as La Niña conditions are expected to develop.
“La Niña, especially for the southern half of the state, almost always leads into drier-than-normal conditions for the winter and spring,” Grymes explained.
