Ed Orgeron is back coaching at LSU again! Head coach Lane Kiffin has added the former Tigers head coach to his staff as the special assistant to recruiting and defense. WWL Radio Sports Talk show host and longtime friend of Orgeron, Mike Detillier, says Coach O has been wanting to return to LSU for several months.
“He’s all Louisiana; always loved LSU, and so it’s a great opportunity for him to come back. He realizes, at his age, this is most likely the last roundup for him,” Detillier said.
The 64-year-old from LaRose was the head coach at LSU from 2016 to 2021 and put together one of the greatest college football teams ever in 2019 when the Tigers went 15-0 and won the national championship. But two years later he was fired and has been out of coaching ever since. Detillier says Orgeron got the itch to coach again last fall.
“He always would throw that in: ‘I’d love to coach again back at LSU.’ So, I’m thrilled for him, happy for him, and I know one thing: I know his mom’s real happy about that too,” Detillier noted.
Orgeron has been known as one of the best defensive line coaches in college football and Detillier says Kiffin knows outstanding D-line play is critical to winning championships.
“He has recruited and developed 11 first-round pick defensive linemen in his timeframe as a coach. He’s in a really small category to have that many first-round picks,” Detillier said.
This will be the fourth time that Kiffin and Orgeron have been on the same staff together, twice at USC and once at Tennessee 2009. Orgeron’s base salary is $100,000, and it runs through January 2027.
