There are plenty of questions surrounding LSU football as the Tigers prepare for the 2026 season. Can the offense be explosive in Kiffin’s first year? Will the offensive line hold up? Can the defense continue to improve? And who will handle field-goal duties?
But one of the more unexpected questions from LSU fans has had nothing to do with football: Why did Lane Kiffin suddenly disappear from social media?
For years, Kiffin was regarded as one of college football’s most entertaining and active coaches on X, often generating headlines with witty posts and playful jabs. But he hasn’t posted on the platform since May 11, leading some fans to speculate that LSU administrators had asked him to tone down his online presence.
At SEC Media Days, Kiffin revealed the real reason.
The LSU coach said his teenage son, Knox, challenged him to give up social media, and Kiffin accepted.
“Knox pushing me to do that, challenging me allowed me to help other players, friends, coaches, to say, ‘Man, you should try this sometime,"” Kiffin said. “Because once you remove something from your life, you start to learn how people who are addicted to it or need it.”
Kiffin, who has previously spoken publicly about quitting alcohol, said removing social media has had a similarly positive impact on his life.
“A lot of great things have come when I subtracted things out of my life and I eliminated them,” Kiffin said. “That wasn’t the plan to do, but then I did it, and it’s been a couple of months and it’s been really refreshing.”
The 51-year-old said he has even deleted the social media apps from his phone, preventing himself from scrolling through posts.
He called the experience an eye-opening experiment, saying it has made him realize how dependent many people have become on their phones.
“It’s really taken over what we used to say we were worried about our kids doing,” Kiffin said. “Adults are just as bad.”
Kiffin also said social media encourages unhealthy comparisons, as users constantly measure their lives against the carefully curated highlights of others.
With the mystery solved, LSU fans can turn their attention back to the questions that will actually determine the Tigers’ season-most notably whether Kiffin’s offense will be ready when LSU opens the season against Clemson.
