The latest campaign finance report shows that Republican Julia Letlow has $476,000 more in cash on hand than her Democratic opponent Jamie Davis. Dr. Pearson Cross, who teaches political science at ULM, says you would think Letlow would have a more sizable fundraising advantage.
“Given that one has great national backing, and the other one is really kind of a first-time candidate,” Cross noted.
Letlow has raised nearly $7 million. But Cross says that’s a far cry from what has been raised by the winners of Louisiana’s last two U.S. Senate races.
“If we look back to 2022, John Kennedy had raised $41 million. It wasn’t that long ago, 2020, Bill Cassidy had $11 million to $12 million,” Cross said.
It’s important to note that Letlow’s campaign is only nine months old.
Cross says Davis has done well in raising money despite never having ran for a statewide office before….
“Jamie Davis raised nearly $4 million with individual contributions, which is an extraordinary amount of money for a Louisiana Senate race for a Democratic candidate,” Cross explained.
Early voting for the November 3rd election begins Tuesday.
