College-bound seniors to get personalized emails with recommended schools to apply to

High school seniors across the state considering which colleges to apply to will now get personalized emails steering them in the right direction.

The Board of Regents is joining forces with public colleges and universities, higher education systems and college-access organizations in this venture.

“They’re going to get a personalized email, and we’ll talk about the different universities and colleges in their region – and of course all across the state – the scores that they’ve earned in high school make them eligible to apply for,” says Tristan Denley, deputy commissioner of academic affairs and innovation at the Board of Regents.

This venture started as a pilot program in 2024; it now expands throughout all 64 parishes.

“We know it can be kind of confusing as to which schools they might be eligible for and what schools have what programs,” says Dr. Denley, “and so we’re trying to demystify all of that.”

Denley says the emails are tailored to each student.

“We try to tailor those emails so that you get informed about the schools that are in the parish that you live in or some close-by parish,” Denley says. “If you qualify for one of the more selective schools, like LSU flagship, or one of the statewide institutions like Louisiana Tech or the University of Louisiana Lafayette or the University of New Orleans (which will become LSU New Orleans as of July 1), then whichever of those is the closest, then you’re going to be told about those too.”

The venture is supported by a $300,000 grant from Lumina Foundation through its Great Admissions Redesign initiative.
