Governor Jeff Landry signed a bill today that expands a program that provides grant dollars for homeowners to pay for a fortified roof on their home. Landry says this is important legislation because fortified roofs can limit storm damage.
“We have consistently said that stronger roofs equal lower rates. And so, that’s why we encourage homeowners to take these proactive steps to reduce risks; because when they do so, they see the benefit,” Landry said.
The measure signed into law by the governor expands the fortified roof program by additional $50 million.
Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says they will be distributing more grants this summer and a lottery to receive a grant of up to $10,000 will begin next week.
“Registration for the next round of the Louisiana Fortified Homes Program will go live Monday, June 1st at 8 a.m. It will remain open until 5 p.m., June 19th. That’s going to bring in an additional 3,000 grants to homeowners,” Temple explained.
The Fortified Roof Program has been around since 2023 and since that time 4,900 homeowners have used the grant program to install fortified roofs. Temple says another 8,000 + fortified roofs have been installed on homes that did not use the grant program.
“These numbers also reflect the growing confidence that homeowners have in this program, and the growing recognition that this is one of the most effective steps that they can take to protect their property,” Temple noted.
Landry says if you go to the Department of Insurance’s website, www.ldi.la.gov, you can learn more about the FORTIFY roof program and how it can lower your insurance premium….
