A sheriff’s deputy in Iberville Parish is killed, and another is fighting for his life after being shot outside the parish courthouse last night. Investigators say deputies Charles Riley and Brett Stassi Jr. were trying to take 27-year-old Latrell Clark of Baton Rouge into custody, but Clark fought back, grabbed one of their duty weapons and shot them before fatally shooting himself. Riley was killed, and Stassi is fighting for his life. Iberville Parish District Attorney Tony Clayton says Riley and Stassi prevented further carnage.
“There were a bunch of other officers working in adjacent room, and if that young man would have gotten to that room with that gun, we would have had several more shootings to report today,” Clayton said.
Clayton says Riley and Stassi – whose father is the sheriff of Iberville Parish, Brett Stassi Sr. – are true heroes.
“It’s officers like this that we owe a debt of gratitude to, because we walk around as free people because of what they do,” Clayton said.
Clayton says this is a very hard day in Iberville Parish.
“They brought in grief counselors. It’s a real somber mood around that courthouse today. And it will be for quite some time,” Clayton said.
*UPDATE* LSP Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting in Iberville Parish (October 7, 2025):
Plaquemine – Louisiana State Police detectives continue the investigation into a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the Iberville Parish Courthouse.
The preliminary investigation revealed that an Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office (IPSO) detective was interviewing 27-year-old Latrell Clark of White Castle in connection with an ongoing sex crimes investigation. At the conclusion of the interview, the IPSO detective informed Clark that he was under arrest.
Clark actively resisted and attempted to disarm the detective, resulting in a physical struggle during which several gunshots were fired. As a result, Clark, the detective, and a responding IPSO deputy were all struck by gunfire.
