LDR: Millions in state income tax returns still uncashed

If you have a state tax refund owed to you, you have until September 6th to claim it before the money goes into unclaimed property.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue mailed out notices on Monday.

“We sent notice of unclaimed property letters to 17,976 individual and business taxpayers,” says Byron Henderson, LDR spokesman. “The amount of refunds due for transfer is not claimed is just under $17 million.”

(To be precise to the penny: $16,930,922.38)

Henderson says it’s important to note that if the money is not cashed by the September 6th deadline, it is not forfeited.

“Any refund not claimed by the September 6 deadline remains the property of the taxpayer,” Henderson says. “Whether you claim it from us or not, it’s still your money.”

Henderson says the unclaimed tax refunds were sent out in the form of paper checks.

“For whatever reason, they did not get their refunds by direct deposit,” says Henderson. “So we sent them paper checks. And those checks have not been redeemed.”

If you receive a letter of an unclaimed state tax refund, you can claim your money by either going to revenue.louisiana.gov/UnclaimedRefund, or you can complete and return the voucher attached to the letter.
