We’re in extreme heat season through October; thus, the Louisiana Department of Health is urging you to continue to take precautions when spending an extended period of time outside. Secretary Bruce Greenstein says historically, summers are deadly in Louisiana, and this year is no different.
“We have eight confirmed heat-related deaths so far. Seven of them are 65 years or older, and three of the eight are associated with substance use,” Greenstein said.
From 2023 through 2025, LDH recorded 172 heat-related deaths. Adults ages 65 and older accounted for 38% of those deaths. Greenstein says the number of elderly heat-related deaths signs a call to action for every family, neighbor and caregiver.
Greenstein urges you to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible, drink plenty of water and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. He also urges you to know the signs of heat illness.
“A racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, weakness; heavy sweating or unusual thirst can give the signs of heat-related illness,” Greenstein explained.
