Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple expects insurance rates to continue downward trend in 2026

Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says 2025 was the year when Louisianans started seeing their insurance rates go down, and he’s looking forward to that trend continuing in 2026. Temple says 30 auto insurance carriers filed for premium decreases in 2025. And in 2026, rates will continue to go down when the impact of legislation passed earlier this year takes hold.

“We had a big focus on legal reform this last legislative session, and we haven’t even started seeing the impact of that yet on rates. Those will start to have an impact next year,” Temple said.

Temple says while premiums are going in the right direction, they’re still considerably higher than those in neighboring states like Mississippi and Alabama – and he says there’s one key factor in bringing those premiums down to those levels.

“If we want to have similar premiums that the rest of the country enjoys, we have got to get our claim count down to where it should be,” Temple noted.

Temple says he’s focused on making Louisiana a great place for all parties when it comes to insurance.

“When a claim happens, that claim is going to be treated fairly from the regulatory standpoint. It’s going to be treated fairly from the legal standpoint,” Temple said.
