A gutsy season by the UL Lafayette football team comes to an end with a 20-13 loss to Delaware in the 68 Ventures Bowl. The Cajuns fell behind 20-3 before scoring ten unanswered points to pull to within a touchdown. The Cajuns had a chance to tie it on the last play of the game, but quarterback Lunch Winfield’s pass was broken up in the end zone. After the game, head coach Mike Desormeaux said he’s proud of everything his team accomplished, including winning their last four games to achieve bowl eligibility.
“I’m heartbroken for these guys, for everything they’ve done to get here, and then to come up a little bit short in the end, is just tough,” Desormeaux said.
Desormeaux says the game was a microcosm of the entire season.
“I couldn’t be more proud of a group of people. The way these guys battled through everything. I mean, down 17 again, and make a push to come back and try to win. I mean, it’s just the belief on this team has been unbelievable,” Desormeaux said.
Winfield says this season has been a learning experience.
“We know what it takes now. We know what’s the standard. We know what it takes to get to this level. And we’re just going to build off our mistakes and build for next season,” Winfield said.
The Cajuns finish the season with a record of 6-7.
