SNAP recipients can now earn bonus benefits when they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables with their EBT cards at Walmart and Walmart Neighborhood Market locations. Louisiana Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein says it’s part of the Louisiana Carrot Initiative.
“We invented the program, basically, to create an incentive for consuming more fruits and vegetables; more healthy foods,” Greenstein said.
The Louisiana Carrot Initiative provides SNAP recipients with a 30¢ bonus for every dollar spent on fresh fruits and vegetables at participating retailers, which Greenstein says now includes Walmart.
“When someone goes to check out, they essentially get 30¢, like a rebate back on their card for every dollar that they spend in fresh fruits and vegetables, Greenstein explained.
Greenstein says SNAP recipients can earn up to $25 in bonus benefits each month.
“When you think about it, you can buy over $83 of fresh fruits and vegetables and with that, you get $25 back on your card,” Greenstein noted.
Since launching in April of 2025, Louisiana SNAP recipients have earned more than $1.6 million in bonus benefits through the Louisiana Carrot Initiative.
