Attorney General Liz Murrill says Louisiana will join Florida and Alabama in investigating Dr. Anthony Fauci to see whether he could be brought up on state charges. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says Murrill is alleging that Fauci lied about the origins of COVID-19, the need for wearing masks, the need for lockdowns and school closures and other things.
“Presumably, it is based on discrepancies between his recently released personal diaries and what he said at the depositions given to the states some years ago,” Ciolino explained.
Ciolino says it’s important to note that the Louisiana attorney general typically does not have the authority to initiate a criminal prosecution.
“Her office can investigate, but she typically has to defer to DAs in local judicial districts to bring prosecutions,” Ciolino noted.
Ciolino says if a district attorney does proceed to prosecute Dr. Fauci, convicting him in a court of law would be a very tall task.
“It’s notoriously difficult to bring a perjury prosecution based on a response that the person under oath ‘did not recall some factual information,"” Ciolino said.
