LSU will soon be launching a bachelor’s degree program in artificial intelligence. The four-year program is the first of its kind in Louisiana. James Ghawaly, an assistant professor of science and engineering at LSU, says this degree program goes well beyond simply how to use AI.

“Not just how to use these technologies, but how to actually build them from the ground up, building a highly technical and scientific program to train engineers to design the next generation of AI assistance,” Ghawaly explained.

Along with building new AI technologies from the ground up, students will also learn the ethics of using AI, which Ghawaly says is standard procedure in most engineering programs these days. He says students will also learn how to detect whether video content was created using AI.

“There are a lot of interesting approaches. Many of them are in research. Some of them are a little bit more deployable, that allow you to analyze this generated content and predict the chances that it is AI-generated versus genuine,” Ghawaly said.

Ghawaly says the program is starting in just a few months.

“We are aiming to have the program open to enrollment for fall 2026. That’s coming up very soon, so we don’t expect to get a lot of students until the spring or even the fall of 2027,” Ghawaly said.
