Another company announces an investment in Lafayette. Baton Rouge-based electrical contractor MMR announces that it’s expanding its footprint in Louisiana by investing in a new assembly plant in Lafayette. Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois says it’s a huge win for both Lafayette and the state.
“It’s Louisiana Company that was started here, that it was built here, that’s been not only investing capital in Louisiana for a long time, but they’ve been building Louisiana because of the nature of what they do as an industrial contractor,” Bourgeois said.
That will create 200 direct new jobs with an average annual salary of $85,000 a year, along with more than 300 indirect new jobs. This comes on the heels of Friday’s announcement of Houston-based drone manufacturer DMR moving into a facility in Lafayette that it’s currently renovating. Bourgeois says the drones DMR will be building will have several applications which are germane to Louisiana.
“Agriculture, which is one of our priority sectors, defense, which is one of our priority sectors. So it’s just a great example of how the Louisiana economy is future-proofing,” Bourgeois explained.
Bourgeois says the announcements by MMR and DMR are the latest examples of how Louisiana is becoming a technology hub for the country.
“We’re seeing investment from companies that are going to build on our legacy industries, but do it with technology and innovation that moves us into the future. And really, continues to put us on the map for that kind of manufacturing,” Bourgeois noted.
