Thousands of Louisiana taxpayers may be owed money, but time is running out to claim it.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue says it has more than $17.5 million in unclaimed state tax refunds. Department spokesman Byron Henderson says the agency has mailed nearly 23,000 letters to individual and business taxpayers advising them to claim their refunds before they are transferred by law to the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office.
Henderson says anyone who receives one of the letters can claim the refund by following the instructions provided or by using the information included in the notice.
Taxpayers who receive one of these letters from LDR can claim their refunds by one of two methods:
- Visit www.revenue.louisiana.gov/UnclaimedRefund and provide the requested information; OR
- Complete and return to LDR the voucher attached to the Notice of Unclaimed Property letter dated July 24, 2026
Taxpayers have until September 4 to claim their refunds before the money is transferred to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division.
Even after the transfer, Henderson says the money is never forfeited. Taxpayers can still claim their refunds through the state’s unclaimed property program at a later date.
