Saints head coach Kellen Moore announced that second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler will be the team’s starting quarterback for week one against the Arizona Cardinals. Rattler won a tight competition over rookie Tyler Shough. Moore says Rattler was more consistent during training camp and in preseason games.
“He’s just been consistent. He’s made some really good decisions throughout this whole entire process, and his ability to make plays with his arm and his feet have certainly shown up. And so I’m really, really excited about Spencer. He’s earned this opportunity. He’s going to do a tremendous job for us,” Moore said.
Moore says the Saints will benefit from Rattler in his second season in the league as he has improved his decision-making while still finding a way to do what the coaching staff asks of him.
“I think it’s decision making. He’s taken a really awesome step there. He’s making really good decisions with the football. He’s an aggressive player. And that’s one of his superpowers. But he’s done a really good job of balancing that out and making really good decisions with the football,” Moore explained.
Moore says Rattler solidified the starting role after his performances in practice and against the Denver Broncos.
“Checked it off with the last preseason game. I had a really, really good week that entire week. We were out over at the Dome for that practice on a Wednesday night. I thought he did an excellent job and carried that through right into Denver. So, you know, we feel like he put himself in a position to have a successful start. He’s going to give us a heck of a chance to compete and go win some games,” Moore said.
