Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. is following head coach Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge. But first, he’s coaching Ole Miss for the rest of the College Football Playoff, starting with tomorrow night’s Sugar Bowl against Georgia. Weis says it was a tough decision to make, but he believes it was the right one.

“It’s been very difficult, just having to make these difficult decisions. But at the same time, obviously, you got playoffs. You have the Egg Bowl, the playoffs, all the same kind, just all spiraled and hit really quickly. But I’m really just blessed to be in the position I’m in, to get to coach this team and to get to do great things later on too,” Weis said.

Weis went to Baton Rouge after the Rebels’ 41-10 win over Tulane in the first round. Weis says he’s been doing his best to do right by Ole Miss in finishing the season out while carrying out daily duties for his new LSU gig.

“I still meet with the players on the same sort of schedule, but at nighttime, I just have to be able to flip the job and do some recruiting stuff on the other side with LSU. It’s been strange, but I don’t feel like it’s been in a distraction at all,” Weis said.

Weis and Kiffin’s relationship dates back to coaching together on the Alabama staff in 2015. Weis also followed Kiffin to Florida Atlantic and to Ole Miss. Weis says Kiffin has a special ability to develop quarterbacks.

“I think the cool thing about Coach (Kiffin) is, he’s been able to mold the offense to the quarterback, and we’ve had tons of different styles of quarterbacks throughout the course of time, and that’s what I think makes Coach great,” Weis explained.
