Some very special visitors to Baton Rouge yesterday are fueling speculation over LSU’s football coaching vacancy. Lane Kiffin’s ex-wife and several Kiffin family members were in the capital city scouting the area, one day after they had toured Gainesville, Florida. Tiger Rag Editor Glenn Guilbeau says Kiffin’s current school, Ole Miss, wants him to make a decision this week as to where he’s going to go, if anywhere.

“They have an open date, then they end the season at Mississippi State. Ole Miss does not want him coaching in the playoffs, unless he stays at Ole Miss,” Guilbeau said.

As Kiffin weighs his options, Guilbeau says one very influential opinion could be that of Nick Saban, who shares an agent with Kiffin.

“He says that Lane will have a better chance of winning the national championship at LSU than Florida, though both programs are capable of winning a national championship. And so is Ole Miss. Ole Miss could win it this year,” Guilbeau explained.

Guilbeau says if Kiffin is leaning towards leaving Ole Miss, despite repeatedly saying he loves it in Oxford, LSU has one significant advantage over Florida when it comes to recruiting.

“The key advantage for LSU is, it is the only major program in Louisiana for football. Whereas, the state of Florida has Florida, Florida State, Miami,” Guilbeau noted.

As for a certain junior linebacker on LSU’s roster, Guilbeau says the fact that Whit Weeks is dating Kiffin’s daughter will have no bearing on what he ultimately decides to do.
