Tragedy in Livingston Parish as a teenage boy is killed while riding his bike in his subdivision. Sheriff Jason Ard says the driver who hit the boy was very drunk.

“The young man was on his bicycle, hit by a driver. We later were able to determine that he (the driver) was double the limit of the alcohol content in his system,” Ard said.

Sheriff Ard says the driver, 31-year-old Juan Alfredo Chavarria Lezama, is from Nicaragua. He fled the scene, but deputies later caught him and arrested him.

“He’s an undocumented male, a Hispanic male, here illegally from what we’re gathering. He does have an ICE detainer at the time. He’s also charged with multiple charges like the vehicular homicide, reckless operation, DWI first offense,” Ard explained.

Ard says given the hour that this happened, visibility was not a factor.

“It’s not like it’s 10 or 12 at night. It’s 7 o’clock. There’s still some daylight out there. Obviously, his impairment is the main cause here,” Ard noted.
