Congresswoman Julia Letlow releases a poll that shows her leading the U.S. Senate Republican Primary. The survey shows her leading incumbent Bill Cassidy by 1% and John Fleming by 8%. Pearson Cross teaches political science at ULM and says Letlow paid for the poll, but the results probably reflect the view of primary voters.
“Letlow hasn’t put it away, but also, Cassidy’s campaign hasn’t put Letlow away yet, either,” Cross said.
The two-day survey was conducted last week by Fabrizio, Lee and Associates. It has Letlow at 27%, Cassidy at 26%, Fleming at 19% and 28% are undecided. Cross says Fleming is hoping to get the support of those undecided voters.
“With 28% undecided, if Fleming can get a significant proportion of those, he can make it into the runoff,” Cross noted.
The Senate Republican Primary is May 16th. Cross expects a battle all the way to the end.
“It’s mostly going to depend on who’s got the best campaign, who’s got the best ads and, most importantly, who has the money to spend to put those ads in front of people and to get people informed about them,” Cross explained.
The Letlow poll shows that once respondents are informed that President Trump endorsed Letlow, her lead over Cassidy increases to 29% and 34% over Fleming. The survey of 600 likely republican primary voters shows Letlow leads Cassidy by 12 points in a head-to-head runoff matchup.
